Prof. em. Dr. Hartwig Isernhagen

Hartwig Isernhagen got his education at Freiburg (Germany), Cologne, the University of Pennsylvania, and Würzburg; he has done research at various institutions in Britain, Canada, The Netherlands, and the US and taught or lectured in these countries as well as France and Italy. After one year at the University of Texas at Austin, he came to Basel, where he was Professor of American Literature from 1981 to 2004.
    His publications in American Studies include Ästhetische Innovation und Kulturkritik: Das Frühwerk von John Dos Passos, 1916-1938 (1983) and Momaday, Vizenor, Armstrong: Conversations on American Indian Writing (1999), as well as articles on the theory and history of twentieth century fiction (modernism/post-modernism, the New Literatures in English) and the humanities in transition.
