His main interests include English Renaissance drama, eighteenth-century poetry (William Cowper and Edward Young), the communicative and pragmatic functions of literature and American Studies. He has edited and translated Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida (1986) in the bilingual series Englisch-deutsche Studienausgabe der Dramen Shakespeares and has published a book on how readers communicate with poets (The Friendly Reader, 1991). He is currently editing the Studienausgabe of Shakespeare's King Lear. After his assistantship in Basel and after teaching in the English Department of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, he divided his time and affiliation between the Universities of St. Gallen (HSG) and Basel, retiring at the end of spring term 2013.
